Statement calls for wider view before vote

Protesters against the church's policies on sexuality stand in silent vigil during the 2012 United Methodist General Conference in Tampa, Fla. A UMNS photo by Mike DuBose.

As debate on human sexuality closed LaTrelle Easterling (New England, USA, clergy) noted that open, inclusive churches are thriving, in addition to congregations self-described as conservative.  What’s important, she said, “is offering vital, thriving ministries to all in the community.”

She added that “It is time for us to stop pretending that the only to thrive, to be vital, to be Christ-centered and to be biblical is to be conservative within The United Methodist Church.”

The vote on amendments to Paragraph 161.F in the Book of Discipline ended shortly after her statement.

Bishop Thomas Bickerton announced the outcome: 441 in favor; 507 against.
